Emotional Charades
You need:
Think of different emotions. For kindergarten students this may be sad, happy, mad, scared. Students draw emotion faces and label the emotion. Parents you may need to help with this step. First graders, older siblings, and parents think of more complex emotions like frustrated, stressed, or furious and draw and label. You could make this game more difficult by doing emotional sentences. For example. Holding a baby, hitting a home run, or missing my friends. Again, parents, you can help with the writing and reading steps.
Cut the examples of emotions or sentences out and fold into smaller pieces to mix into a bowl or box.
Take turns drawing out emotions to act out and have your family guess what emotion you are showing.
Remember try not to talk and each player can have 10-20 seconds to act. You could assign a time keeper and interpreter for younger players.
After you play the game, talk about the different emotions you acted out and things or situations that could make you feel that way. End the game by discussing coping skills that can help us calm and express big and/or hard emotions. You can make a family coping skills list to use during this time.
Some Coping skills we have discussed this year at school:
You need:
- Paper
- Something to write with
- Scissors
- A box or bowl

Lesson 2: listening
Why is it important to be a good listener?
How do you feel when someone isn’t listening to you?
What could you do to be a better listener?
What does an active listener do?
Games to practice listening skills at home:
Simon Says. Take turns being Simon.
Interview game.
Take turns interviewing a family member.
Interviewee can only answer with one word but use face and body to get your point across. See if you can understand each other and listen actively.
Example interview questions:
Think of your own interview questions and write them down.
Interviewees try to only answer with one word but use your face and body. For example only say broccoli, spinach, or cold but express how you feel about each with body and facial expression. This requires the interviewer to use whole body listening.
Practice listening by a fun game of Simon Says.
